Discussion:
EON: Setting samba shares

I installed the 64bit x86 CIFS version then followed the "getting started" guide from http://sites.google.com/site/eonstorage/getting-started but I was unable to get shared folders when accessing the \\IP_Address_of_eon\.

As I'm planning to use the server as a NAS at home where I do not have any workgroup/ AD directory, which EON version will allow me to set up users/permissions locally on the box ? In the "getting started" guide I did not find any mention about sharing/editing a configuration file ( like the well known smb.conf file ).

Regards,
Adrian

Hi Adrian,

What's the error after \\IP_address_eon\ ? Is the IP address correct pingable, etc?

The getting started link has 2 columns. One is for the CIFS version of EON and the other is for samba. The CIFS version does not use smb.conf.

Have you already seen this doc?

First, thank you very much for your reply and for offering guidance.

The IP address is fine - I'm able to connect through ssh and login as root after :

The smbd service is running as proc 650.

While doing the same example on the http://sites.google.com/site/eonstorage/begin page, I'm getting the following error :

Any clues why I'm getting this errors ?
The same thing happens if I'm using a real harddisk instead of the virtual ramdrive.

Also, when accessing the \\IP_address_eon\ I'm getting the "

Extra info : This is a virtual machine running in Microsoft Virtual PC where eon-0.600-130-32-smb.iso was used as install media.

and has an i387 compatible floating point processor.

On the real machine I was using the 64bit CIFS version and when accessing the \\IP_address_eon\, I was getting an empty window (without any share names) and an error when trying to access \IP_address_eon\abyss - which I can post it tomorrow as I'm not near the machine at the moment.

Adrian

Hi Adrian,

I suspect the error may be related to RAM resources allocated to the virtual machine.

This machine had 1024Mb or ram and now I increased the ram to 2048Mb.

I am still getting the same error while "zfs create sharesmb=on" :
cannot share 'abyss/media': smb add share failed
filesystem successfully created, but not shared

While trying to find the reason I ran a "truss -f zfs create -o casesensitivity=mixed -o sharesmb=on abyss/media" and the output can be found at http://pastebin.com/dgzzmgz9

Strange fact : when getting when smbshare attributes, the sharesmb property is on :
# zfs get sharesmb,sharenfs abyss/media
NAME PROPERTY VALUE SOURCE
abyss/media sharesmb on local
abyss/media sharenfs off default

But when trying to :
#zfs set sharesmb=name=media abyss/media
cannot set property for 'abyss/media': 'sharesmb' cannot be set to invalid options

Output of "truss -f zfs set sharesmb=name=media abyss/media" can be found at : http://pastebin.com/KtV66zHB

Adrian

Hi Adrian,

I see what's happening, This error is ok to ignore. It's because you are using the Samba version. There is no CIFS daemon to handle the share request in this form.

For the Samba version, you will have to edit /etc/smb.conf to control sharing.

After reviewing both intro pages I am now able to view/browse the samba shares and, most important, to set up the permissions by editing the /etc/sfw/smb.conf file.

Thank you very much for all the help - this is a great Solaris distro and my only regret is that I did not discovered EON ( and opensolaris ) sooner.
